What Is an AI BDR? What It Does, What It Costs, and Where It Stops
AI BDRs promise a pipeline that builds itself. Most of the explanations online are written by vendors selling one. This guide covers what the software really does at each step, how it differs from an AI SDR, what the main tools cost, and the part of the job it hands back to you.
An AI BDR runs the first six steps on its own. The demo it books still waits for a person, or for a different kind of agent.
What Is an AI BDR?
An AI BDR is software that does the outbound work of a business development representative. It finds accounts that fit your ideal customer profile, researches them, writes and sends personalized outreach by email and social, follows up, handles replies, and books meetings on a human rep's calendar.
The category took off around 2024, led by Artisan's Ava, marketed as an “AI BDR”, and 11x's Alice. By 2026 there are dozens of them, from self-serve tools at $250 a month to managed programs on annual contracts. They share the same promise: more first conversations with new accounts without hiring more reps.
One disclosure: SnapSDR is an AI demo agent, not an AI BDR, and runs on Tough Tongue AI's agent infrastructure. Both come up later in this guide, in the part of the pipeline that AI BDRs hand off.
AI BDR vs AI SDR
The AI versions inherit the human split. A BDR creates pipeline from accounts that have never heard of you. An SDR responds to people who already raised a hand. Plenty of companies use the titles interchangeably, and so do vendors, so judge an agent by what it does, not what it is called.
| AI BDR (outbound) | AI SDR (inbound) | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | A cold account that fits your ICP | A demo request, form fill, chat, or call |
| Main channels | Email and social, sometimes calls | Phone, website chat, SMS, email |
| What wins | Relevance at volume | Speed: seconds or minutes |
| Success metric | Meetings booked with new accounts | Leads qualified and meetings held |
| Examples | Artisan Ava, 11x Alice, AiSDR, Reply Jason AI, Salesforge Agent Frank | 11x Julian, Qualified Piper, Conversica, Tough Tongue AI |
What an AI BDR Actually Does
Under the marketing, every AI BDR runs the same seven-step loop. The difference between a good rollout and a burned domain is knowing which part of each step is still yours.
Tap a stage to see what the AI does, what a person still owns, and what to watch
1. Build the list
The AI does
Pulls accounts and contacts that match your ideal customer profile from its own database (11x says 400M+ profiles, Artisan 250M+) or from live web search, and adds intent signals such as website visits or job changes.
A person owns
Defines the ICP and the exclusions. A loose ICP produces a long list of polite rejections.
Watch for
Data accuracy. Wrong titles, stale emails, and inaccurate details show up in G2 complaints across the category.
Where It Stops
AI BDRs are good at the repetitive middle of prospecting. Four limits show up again and again in reviews and rollouts.
Accuracy
Inaccuracy appears among the G2 complaint tags for Artisan, AiSDR, and 11x, and it is the most common one for Artisan. Wrong data and generic personalization cost more than they save.
Deliverability
An agent can send more email in a day than a team used to send in a week. Without separate domains and warmup, your main domain pays for it.
Platform risk
Social channels change their rules. LinkedIn restricted Artisan for about two weeks from December 19, 2025, and the company now refers to “social” instead of naming LinkedIn.
The meeting itself
The AI BDR's job ends at a booked meeting. The first demo still waits for an account executive's calendar, often a day or more, and that is where interest cools.
Even Artisan, which built its brand on “Stop Hiring Humans”, hired its first human BDR in August 2026 and retired the slogan for “Be More Human” in September. The lesson most teams land on is the same: AI BDRs give each rep more reach, they do not remove the need for judgment.
What an AI BDR Costs
Entry prices split into two tiers: self-serve tools between $250 and $500 a month, and managed programs on annual contracts. Vendr's median contract is about $30,000 a year for Artisan and $55,000 for 11x.

2,000 new prospects a month, billed annually
Plans cover different volumes, so compare cost per contact or per meeting, not the headline. Mailboxes and phone numbers are extra on some plans. Prices read October 2026.

AI BDR Tools in 2026
The tool that named the category. Email and social outreach from your own domains, strong guardrails (approvals, tone and CTA locks), a self-serve tier from $250 a month.
Multichannel outbound with 11x-managed mailboxes and 2,000 new prospects a month on the entry plan. Pairs with Julian for inbound calls and chat. Annual contracts from $3,750 a month.
Rebuilt around the Ami agent in September 2026. Email, LinkedIn, and SMS, with AI call steps through Aircall. $250 a month, monthly, no sales call needed.
An AI SDR agent inside Reply's sales engagement platform, with a dialer and a 1B+ contact database. From $500 a month annually or $800 monthly.
Autonomous cold email and LinkedIn on Salesforge's sending stack. $499 a month billed quarterly, with mailboxes from $33 a month on top.
Now a self-serve agentic sales workspace with enrichment, email, and a power dialer. Free plan, Pro from $41 a month.
The Other Half: Agents That Run the Conversation
The tools above book meetings. These two run them, which is why teams pair one with an AI BDR rather than choosing between them.
AI demo agent
SnapSDR
Joins the Google Meet or Zoom call the moment a prospect books, walks through the product live in a browser or slides, answers questions, qualifies, and hands warm buyers to your reps. Our own product.
AI SDR you configure
A platform for building live AI agents. As an AI SDR it calls a new lead seconds after it lands in HubSpot or Salesforce, qualifies, demos on the call or in Meet and Zoom, and books the meeting. From $20 a month; $0.07 per minute on Enterprise.
How to Roll Out an AI BDR Without Burning Your Domain
Send from separate domains
Buy lookalike sending domains, warm the mailboxes for a few weeks, and keep your main domain out of cold outreach entirely.
Start with one narrow segment
One industry, one persona, a few hundred contacts. A tight ICP is the fastest way to learn whether the messaging works.
Approve the first batches
Keep a human approval step until a week of sends reads like your best rep wrote them, then loosen it.
Give it a knowledge base and an escalation list
Product facts, pricing rules, and the questions it must hand to a person, such as security reviews and discounts.
Plan what happens after the reply
Decide who runs the meeting and how fast. A booked meeting that waits three days loses most of what the agent earned.
Measure meetings held, not booked
Track show rate, opportunities created, and pipeline per 100 contacts. Booked meetings alone flatter every AI BDR.
Do You Need an AI BDR, an AI SDR, or a Demo Agent?
They solve different leaks in the same pipeline. Answer honestly and the right mix falls out.
Three questions. Answer all three.
1.Are you short on conversations with accounts that have never heard of you?
2.Do inbound leads wait more than an hour for a reply?
3.Do your buyers want to see the product before they talk to sales?
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AI BDR?
Software that does the outbound work of a business development representative: it finds accounts that fit your ICP, researches them, writes and sends outreach, follows up, handles replies, and books meetings for a human rep.
What is the difference between an AI BDR and an AI SDR?
An AI BDR creates pipeline from cold accounts. An AI SDR responds to people who already raised a hand and qualifies them fast. Vendors use both titles loosely, so check what the agent actually does.
Can an AI BDR replace a human BDR?
It can take over list building, research, first drafts, sending, and follow-ups. Strategy, messaging, and the meetings it books still need people, or a demo agent for the first call.
How much does an AI BDR cost?
About $250 a month for self-serve tools like Artisan and AiSDR, $499 to $500 for Salesforge and Reply, and $3,750 a month on an annual contract for 11x Alice.
Will an AI BDR hurt my email deliverability?
It can if it sends from your main domain. Use separate sending domains, warm up new mailboxes, start small, and watch bounce and reply rates every week.
Can an AI BDR make phone calls or run demos?
Some add calls: 11x offers AI voice for inbound and consented outbound, and AiSDR adds call steps through Aircall. None of the main AI BDRs runs the demo. AI demo agents like SnapSDR and Tough Tongue AI do.
More Reach, Same Bottleneck
An AI BDR is the right tool when the problem is too few first conversations with new accounts. Pick one by price model and channel, protect your domain, and judge it on meetings held.
Then look at what happens next. The more meetings an AI BDR books, the longer the line for the first demo gets. Close that gap with an agent that runs the call itself, and the pipeline the AI BDR builds stops leaking at the handoff.
